20 Years Later – Day Six: The Long Road Home

August 7, 2026 No Comments
Old Wood Barn off I-70 highway in the middle of Kansas

We started the last day just outside Mesa Verde with a long way to go. Kansas City was the goal, the whole southwest corner of Colorado and everything after it standing between us and there. Alex still had Iowa waiting once he dropped me off. One more day.

  • Kentucky’s hidden wonder 🏔️
Deep in Daniel Boone National Forest, a nearly 100-foot-long sandstone arch rises from the forest floor — carved by thousands of years of wind and water. The Natural Arch in McCreary County is one of the most jaw-dropping geological formations in the Eastern U.S., and most people have never even heard of it.
Hike the Natural Arch Loop Trail (#510) to see it up close. It never gets old.

  • Checked off another space themed bucket list item. Loved seeing all the exhibits. We as humans can be amazing when we work together for common goals.

  • Built in 1672, Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the U.S. Made from coquina stone, its walls were designed to absorb cannon fire, helping it withstand centuries of conflict and change.

Overlooking Matanzas Bay, it stands as a lasting piece of Spanish colonial history and a reminder that Florida’s story runs deeper than its beaches.

  • Was lucky to enjoy a daytime launch and a night launch from the front porch.

Daytime Launch: The Blue Origin New Glenn rocket is a massive heavy-lift vehicle, standing over 300 feet tall with a reusable first-stage booster and a wide payload fairing built to carry large satellites into orbit. On this launch, it carried a commercial satellite payload designed for communications and data transmission, though it ultimately did not reach its intended orbit.

Night Launch: The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is a two-stage, reusable launch vehicle known for its returning first-stage booster and frequent missions from Florida and California. On this flight, it carried the GPS III SV08 satellite, part of the next-generation GPS constellation designed to provide more accurate and secure navigation signals worldwide.
  • Spent the morning enjoying some beautiful views and lots of wildlife sightings at Orlando Wetlands.

Orlando Wetlands Park was created in the late 1980s by the City of Orlando as a large-scale, man-made wetland designed to naturally filter reclaimed water before it flows into the St. Johns River. What began as a functional water treatment system gradually transformed into a thriving ecosystem, and today it serves as both critical environmental infrastructure and a protected habitat supporting hundreds of species of birds, wildlife, and native plants.
