On Labor Day I grabbed my water pack, some snacks, and headed out. I was headed an hour north of Kansas City to a nice small state park. Weston Bend State Park sits nestled in the bluffs above the Missouri River in Weston, Missouri. A relatively small state park but well worth the visit. It is almost a hidden gem in northwest Missouri, with great views of the river and nice panoramic views of Leavenworth, Kansas.

Hiking at Weston Bend State Park

The park has eight paths ranging in length from 0.20 miles to 3.25 miles, so there is something for just about every fitness level. There is also a paved bike trail, a scenic overlook, camping, and covered picnic shelters. Scattered throughout the park are placards with information about local flora and fauna, which are worth stopping to read as you go.

I started the day hoping to get down to some of the lower trails, but many of them were still under a large amount of water and did not look like they would be passable anytime soon. I spent most of my morning on the West Ridge Trail instead. This trail takes you along a nice ridge with some amazing views of the Missouri River. The weather was fantastic, and early on it was rather quiet. As the day went on, more families with young kids and folks with their dogs came out. It was nice to see everyone out enjoying the day.

Tips for Visiting

Weston Bend State Park is a great day trip from Kansas City, but a few things are worth knowing before you go. If there has been recent rain, check conditions before heading to the lower trails near the river, as they can flood and become impassable. The upper ridge trails stay accessible in most conditions and offer the best views regardless.
Fall is a fantastic time to visit. When the leaves start to change, the views from the West Ridge Trail over the Missouri River valley are really something. I am already looking forward to getting back out there with my bigger camera when the colors come in.

Since the trails were not all that physically demanding, this is also a good park for families or anyone looking for a scenic hike without a brutal climb. Just be ready for some soreness if it has been a while. My body had some strong opinions about the physical activity on the drive home, and I ended up with a small blister for my trouble. Well worth it.

If you want the full details on Weston Bend before you go, the Weston Bend place page has the know before you go info, coordinates, and photos from the visit. Knob Noster State Park is a good companion stop if you are spending a weekend in Missouri, with oak woodland trails, fishing lakes, and full camping about two hours south.
