No matter where you ask this question you will always get completely different answers. The “official definition” is summed up to be any type of self-reliant travel overland with the primary goal of going to remote destinations. Visit any “Overlanding” Facebook group or troll comments on Instagram and you will quickly find that there are very large factions that support many different ideals.

I lean towards a similar mentality from the hiking world. “Hike Your Hike” or simply put do whatever you want as long as you are having fun, not destroying the environment, or being an annoyance to others. Use the gear that works best for your needs and the rig that you love to drive. Everything else is what is important, the outdoors and the adventure in between the campsites.

To me, Overlanding is getting outdoors and finding places that are not accessible to everyone while having the gear that makes me comfortable while there.  Each trip is an adventure.  Packing the vehicle, the drive to the location, and spending time there is all part of the adventure.

So now the question lies with you. What do you consider to be Overlanding?

There is no doubt that if you visit any Overlanding group or community they are talking about some topic that someone is trying to argue about. “What is the best … type of thing for doing something or another. ” No matter the answer there is always a counterargument.  This also seems to be the crux of social media these days. So no matter what you do it will always be wrong.

So what do we do?  What if simply go outside, enjoy our adventures, clean up as we go along, and leave things better than we found them?

For me, that is what I am going to continue doing! Plan my adventures, enjoy them, and take you all along for the ride.

Happy Adventures!
